Essex Youth Jazz Quintet and Sextet performed at the Winter Variety Concert at Christ Church URC Chelmsford on 31st January 2020 with their resident director, Martin Hathaway raising funds for the Essex Young Musicians Trust.

Both groups entertained the audience alongside many other local performers, such as singers, an accordionist and The Chelmsford Guitar Orchestra.

The Essex Youth Jazz Quintet performed Road Song by Wes Montgomery and Contarnos by Andrew Hill and the Sextet performed Blind Man by Herbie Hancock and Guinea by Don Cherry.

Both performances delighted the audience.

Gareth Bennett, the concert organiser said “The audience of about 80 seemed to enjoy it immensely, and have been encouraged to share their enjoyment on the socials where they can.  It’s so wonderful to hear our young people enjoying themselves playing jazz (as this is not a genre generally favoured by youngsters now), and we very much hope to have an ensemble play at our next special Anniversary Variety Concert, which has been booked for Friday 1st May.”
