Essex Youth Jazz Academy meets monthly on a Sunday and provides groups catering from beginners through to Grade 8 and beyond…

Meeting once a month on a Sunday, students from beginner level can attend the Essex Youth Jazz Academy to experience instrumental lessons, improvisation workshops and playing in ensemble group settings.

We run three Jazz Orchestras: Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra, Young Essex Jazz , Essex Junior Jazz. All new members attend a Jazz Workshop Day to determine which group would be most appropriate for them to join.

Players from around Grade 1 standard with an interest in learning jazz can join Essex Junior Jazz (EJJ) and then easily progress through the Academy. Once students have gained a little more experience, they will join Young Essex Jazz (YEJ), before auditioning to join the Essex Youth Jazz Orchestra (EYJO).

Members of the EYJO attend the Academy for the whole day, 10.30am – 4.30pm whilst members of the EJJ and YEJ attend for half a day.

Players are selected by audition from Essex schools and colleges and participate in a schedule of rehearsals, concerts, short courses, workshops and tours. However, if you would like to apply at any time of year for an audition, please click on the appropriate group here:-

About the flagship jazz orchestra and its resident conductor.

The EYJO was formed in 1991, and over that time we have seen many students from all over Essex come and go on to study Jazz at conservatoire level.

The resident director is Martin Hathaway who has been with the band for over 30 years. The orchestra play a wide range of genres from big band standards to contemporary styles and modern composers and perform at many different venues across Essex including churches, studio theatres and jazz clubs.
